How the balconies of Dubai are creating a sense of community as we #stayhome

Residents across Dubai took to their balconies last night in order to show their appreciation for those on the frontline fighting COVID-19. People stood on their balconies and in unison clapped and cheered in gratitude.

The balcony celebration trend, which began in Europe, errupted Dubai for a second time on Wednesday evening. It was particular loud in Marina and JBR where residents took to banging pots and pans creating a lively atmosphere:

The sound of bagpipes filled the Marina as someone stood on their balcony playing the Scottish instrument:

In this heart warming video posted to Twitter, you can hear a child ask, “what are they doing?’ To which an adult replies, “they’re clapping. For all the people that are working hard trying to get people better.”

There were also chants building community spirit and moral. In this video posted by a local you can hear people chanting for the UAE in a gesture of solidarity:

The trend began in Italy and quickly caught wind around the world. From Switzerland to India, people are showing their appreciation for the ‘heroes’ of the corona virus who are putting themselves at danger to help other people.

With the government urging us to stay home in order to save lives amidst the pandemic it is fair to say we will be spending more time in our outside spaces – whether that be a garden or a balcony. We’ve got you covered if you’re on the lookout for inspiration on creating a dreamy alfresco space.
